Antique Market

I’ve been watching others wear shorts and tights ensembles for two years now. I admired the combination on other women, but thought it would be too weird, too slutty, or too chilly to wear myself. Today, the weather was ideal for shorts and tights (cool, but sunny) and I decided that the Tristate Antique Market was the perfect place to be weirdly slutty. (In fact, I got lots of compliments!)

Sweater, Body Central. Green tee and herringbone tights, Forever 21. Shorts, Charlotte Russe. Green tights, Hue. Boots, Diba. Necklace and ring, vintage. Zipper bracelet, Urban Outfitters. Bag, Target. Charm (on bag), World Market.

So, this is what I wore to the antique market, but what did I buy? Take a gander:

Silver and cobalt glass salt and pepper shakers, two owl pendants, a carnival glass ring, a dress/cardigan clip, a metal arrowhead pendant, an owl and a cross mother-of-pearl charms, and a sterling silver antique mechanical pencil (which I intend to wear like Joan of Mad Men).

But back to the outfit…this was super comfortable and fun to wear. Would you wear tights and shorts? Is it really that different from tights with a miniskirt?

  1. Love that outfit! I recently bought some shorts to wear with tights, but haven't had the courage yet.

  2. I've been afraid of the tights + shorts = slutty look for a while myself, even though I have wanted to try it -you make it look classy, not slutty, which I think is all in the personality of the outfit and its wearer. I might have to try this myself now.

  3. Wow! I never thought of shorts with tights as slutty. In fact, I was pretty amused when I noticed this trend resurfacing. I'm 21 now and I remember it being the coolest thing in 3rd grade. I had a pair of yellow shorts with white polka dots that I *loved* wearing with white stockings. It makes me wonder about the "reputation" associated with other trends...

  4. Another great fun outfit!! Although I don't wear shorts with tights, I like the idea... especially because I am so pale, I think tights make it so I don't blind people. They add more interest to the outfit and the possibility for more color!

I keep seeing owl 'things' all over the place now that I have seen your love/obsession with them. And I will have to admit, I might have to start loving them too...

  5. you rocked it. i don't wear shorts... but my main problem with this look is that people do it with pleated long shorts (ack) or totally monochromatic, or those plaid shorts... just way too preppy. the shorter length, layered patterned tights and color combo with the tall boots make this totally cool and not at all staid (i would have said tights/shorts was the opposite of slutty, haha)

  6. I'd love to try the shorts with tights combo since I wear tights with boots and skirts all through fall... What would you suggest for someone on the shorter side with very athleticly large (not real words) legs. I don't want the proportions to look like I'm a fat midgit...

  13. I actually *have* worn shorts and tights, but it was circa 1989/90 and the shorts were always courderoy and knee-length and it was usually accompanied by a vest of some sort. I think the way it's done now is A LOT more attractive and I love this outfit on you.

  14. The last time I wore shorts and tights was circa 1991/1992. I've noticed the resurgence but haven't taken a chance (mostly due to lack of shorts; the only ones I own are for sporty activities).

    Yay! More owls! :-)

  16. I have admired this on others as well but have not yet tried it myself- even though I pretty much wear tights on a daily basis. I don't think it looks slutty at all, I just wouldn't wear it to the office. I'm gonna have to go find some shorts now...

  17. I think it's a little young for me...I've almost given up on the miniskirts as well. I like that you've done two layers of tights for more density.

Some great finds! Those salt and pepper shakers are fab.

I had a dress clip like that in 1987. :)

  18. Oh so cute and perfect for Fall.

What a haul of fabulous items. LOL, every time I see an owl item I think of you.

My son used to have a thing for a snowy owl at a local nature center when he was younger, so owls bring back lovely memories for me. I may need to collect one or two for myself.

  21. In terms of an outfit being risque or suggestive, I think tights with shorts is much more reserved than tights and a teeny skirt. In fact, the addition of tights to short shorts makes the shorts significantly less showy all around.

I'm impressed with your apparent owl-jewelry radar!

  22. I'm glad you embraced the shorts and tights -- this is a great look on you!

  23. I don't think I'd wear tights/shorts, but mostly because I'm a guy. I like the outfit, but I'm just not feeling the boots with the rest of it. I'm sorry :(

  24. very cute! I love the tights and the last photo is win.

  25. Oh yes, a pen like Joan! How are you going to create that one from the pen? I will totally be trying to find a pen to do the same with.

Yay for you! It looks good. I can wear sequin cat ears and mini-dresses cut to indecent levels, yet I also had a weird fashion phobia of not pulling off the shorts/boots/tights combo. I'm gonna do it, haha. Thanks for he inspiration :)

  27. Honestly, I think it is a VERY CUTE outfit! I consider myself to be very conservative in the way I dress, and the word 'slutty' never entered my mind in reference to the "shorts/tights" combo. In fact, it has opened up a whole new door for me fashion wise. Thanks for 'stepping out' and trying something 'different'!

  28. Juliebean19 - the most flattering look with tights and shorts is to wear both items in the same color for an uninterrupted line. I would also recommend a heeled, non-boot shoe (like a wedge loafer) to lengthen your legs and avoid chopping them into segments or emphasizing the thighs. Finally, if the shorts flare away from the thighs a little, it makes the legs look thinner in comparison.

Lauren - the Tristate Antique Market is at the Lawrenceburg (IN) Fairgrounds near the Hollywood (Argosy) Casino. It's finished for the season, but starts up again in May and is held on the first Sunday of the month.

Crystal Weaver - the pencil has a ring at the top that I'll thread through a chain. Maybe it was meant to be worn around the neck?

  29. I love this outfit so so much! I'm dying to try it myself as soon as I get a better pair of shorts!
