I have often dreamed of having enough time to hike the AT. Perhaps that is why Grandma Gatewood didn't strike out on that trail sooner in life. Simply, because she was not afforded the luxury of time during her youth. She was busy with a family. If I ever find myself on the AT, it would be because I feel most at peace while walking in nature, because I LOVE a sense of accomplishment and because I finally had enough time away from work.
