White Tights

Today’s title should be read with the tone and urgency of Gizmo’s “bright light, bright light!” White tights are as repellent to most fashionistas as bright light is to gremlins. I’m sure Stacy and Clinton would recoil in horror.

Sweater, vintage. Dress, Lipstick. Tights, Sock Dreams. Boots, Nine West. Necklace, Anthropologie. Bag, Nicole Lee.

Yes, that’s the bus schedule written on my hand.

I refer to the pose on the left as the “poop in my purse” pose. And while I’m being inappropriately candid, I’ll also admit that I cannot help but pet myself all day when I wear this sweater. Furry boobs!

I intentionally chose the white tights today to counter the somewhat stuffy sweater. I thought they added a casual, sporty vibe.

Last time I wore white tights, they received some negative comments. I admit that they can come off as juvenile and fattening. What’s your take on white tights?

White tights...
go with everything
are best left to the fashionably daring
should only be worn by children

I've gotten similar comments and I've gotta say that I don't think white tights are the root of all evil. They look fab with this ensemble!

  3. I like white tights, but only in certain outfits. This one definitely benefits from them.

  4. I love this look! I think tights that are lighter than your outfit always look cute and kooky - go for it.

  5. I think some people can't do the white tights look but it suits you

  6. I LOVE white tights! I love this outfit! You work the tights to the max. You look awesome.

  7. The only reason I won't wear them is because I get dirty snow water droplets all over them when I walk anywhere. Otherwise, I think they look fun and fresh and make a cute skirt pop.

Plus, if you've got the legs (like you do), why not wear 'em?

  8. while there was a very school-girl quality about the outfit last time you wore them (that could be good or bad, depending on the person), the way you styled them this time really makes them work. they add a pop of brightness to an otherwise dark outfit, and the darkness of the sweater and boots at the same time tines down the brightness of the white tights.
score one for white tights lovers!

  9. I really love this outfit (wow), and I'm not seeing that any other color of tights would improve it (and you've even photographed on a white background!).

I appreciate the fashion-timid being free to stick to the rules as it pleases them; I appreciate more when the fashion-bold bend the rules into statements and develop an eye that discerns more that the rules state. This is beautiful.

I always enjoyed white tights and their doll-like aesthetic.

  12. I like white tights. I wear them occasionally. They look great with this outfit!

  13. I think they are meant for the "fashionably daring". But, I own a pair. I don't think I've worn them yet. You anything but childish today. Very cute I like the contrast of brown and white and the added colors of the dress.

  14. I take that back. I have worn them. It's a blog great? I just looked it up: http://whatiwearinalittletown.blogspot.com/2009/11/workshopparty.html

  15. I wear white tights occasionally, but always a little self-consciously because I've heard they are childish too. I think they look great with this outfit though, and you can only really see your knees anyway.

  16. Well, I picked the Fashionably daring as my answer but I meant you..this is a great outfit..I especially like the hand written bus schedule..I thought I was the only one who did that!

  17. Well, if anyone can pull off white tights it is YOU! I think you look adorable!

  18. I love white tights and wear them all the time! I think this looks really nice on you -- you integrate them very well, so they're not even particularly standing out against the vibrant dress. I like it!

  19. They can be "schoolgirl" if you're not careful, but then again, what fun is being careful all the time? I'm going out of town this weekend and taking a neutral gray sweater dress to wear and was debating between wearing it with purple or white tights...and you've just made my decision for me!! :)

  20. I don't normally like looks with white tights, but I think they look fantastic how you've styled them here!

  22. This outfit is awesome, I love it! I wear white tights, but I put another pair of black lace stockings over them for a black and white effect. I wore just white tights for my Alice Halloween costume and I looked like a cloud with my thicker legs! But the lace helps a lot! :)

  23. I love the white tights on you! It definitely helps that you have HOT legs!!! ;)

I love the printed dress with the fur collar!!

  24. yes, in general, white tights are hard to pully off (but I want to stress the "in general" part). You totally pulled them off today! I think the fact that they are just showing a little bit, and balanced with the tall brown boots and colorful dress makes the white tights look very fresh and fashionable. :-)

  25. I don't have a problem with white tights, especially if they are more on the cream side. If they are stark white and have no pattern then they are hard to work with I imagine. But these have that stripe to them which make them better. I have a pair that I have worn occasionally too and I actually like it.

  26. I am a fan of white tights! I think they look really chic with LBDs and many other ensembles. You are rocking them here!

I just nominated you for an award over on my blog.

  27. I bought a pair of white tights to draw on for a halloween costume. I ended up loving the idea of them (un-altered), so I bought myself a second pair. I don't quite know how to wear them, but I am so glad I'm not alone in owning them!

  28. You've styled them well here. P.S. Thanks for sharing the link to the mom on the go looks. It gave me some new inspiration.

  29. I think you need another option for your poll, while I don't think their right for everything I don't think that white tights are necessarily reserved for the daring. I think they can look great in a lot of outfits, just like picking any colour really.

They look great in this outfit by they way.
oh and 'furry boobs' tee hee gave me a good giggle.

  30. I love white tights. I never realized that they were a fashion no-no, but then again I went to art school so I'm use to being around people who don't really give a damn what the fashion world tells us to wear. They are adorable and I stick by them.

  31. If I wanted my legs to be warm in the winter when I was in high school, white tights were my only option. So they definitely feel young to me. And I've got huge calves so I've shied away from them as an adult for their fattening ability as well. However, recently a coworker has been wearing some rather sheer white tights (almost white hose) and she looks so chic. It's had me pondering if I can pull it off. I still don't think I can, but I no longer think they are an automatic no-no for adults.

  32. I think the white tights are hidden enough that they don't creep into the "eeek!" category. Also, I love this sweater - the fur is great!!

  33. I don't normally like white tights--they definitely give off a juvenile vibe-- they look great here. I think it's because the boots and long skirt only allow a bit to peek through and lighten up the outfit as you intended.

  34. i too am wanting to try out the white tight phenomenon, and am considering an all black dress or skirt combo with boots, or with all tan full dress and tan flats. i like em! these look great as they are thicker, and not sheer like little girl tights!

  36. The white tights go. I am never brave enough to mix black and brown. Do you have a rule of thumb that you follow for doing so?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Janet - the trick with mixing black and brown (and black and navy) is to make it look deliberate. If mixing those colors, I usually add at least two items in each color, so it doesn't just look like I dressed in the dark. Here's all of my black and brown combos:

  38. I think you sported the white tights wisely, but when I read the post tittle I immediately thought you were dressed up as a nurse - that's what I associate white tights with !

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'll embrace the white tights with the right outfit, as you've done here. Anyway, they don't look obnoxiously bright white to me, but more of an eggshell color, which helps.

  40. I have an insatiable urge to irregularly cut little dime and quarter sized holes and slashes into a pair of white tights and use them for layering. Over bright colored tights, under severely destroyed blue jeans, with a pair of cut-off shorts... Using a different color (maybe purple? teal?) they could even be layered with fishnets.

  41. I was all about to hate your white tights, but then I saw how cute they looked with your outfit. You look adorable and you totally rock the white tights.
