I’ll admit, I wanted to quit during the final mile and a half of the run and even walked a few times. But I completed the distance, ate some ice cream, and then jumped up and down.
On race day, I will need to carry all of my energy gel on my person, so I’m experimenting with methods of attaching it to my body. Today, I pinned the top edge of the gel inside of my skirt’s waistband and folded the packet over to the outside. This wasn’t ideal because the packets were flapping around for over two hours and threatened to pull my skirt down. Next time, I’ll pin the packets further inside (so that the packet is folded in half, not at the tear line) and wear a skirt with a drawstring.
I wish I could find a way to carry ice cream on the race. It really is my miracle recovery food.

I'm training for the Flying Pig marathon too, and also ran 16 miles yesterday! I had never run that far, either. It's a great feeling. Congratulations to you! Personally, I can't stand the taste of the gels, but don't mind them in water, so I dissolved four packets in a small water bottle and carried that in my pocket yesterday. It worked well!
ReplyDeleteYou should invest in a pair of RaceReady shorts. They have mesh pockets around the back that make carrying gels and supplements easy. Good luck in the Pig!
ReplyDeleteI like my Fuel Belt (that's the brand, as well as what it is), which as several small bottles for water, as well as a pocket for energy gel (or whatever--keys, cell phone, money, etc). It's nice because it distributes what you're carrying around your whole waist (vs. concentrating the weight in one spot).
ReplyDeleteI use a spibelt to carry my gels. Works perfectly. I love reading about your runs!
ReplyDeleteYou rock!! Everyone says those running belts are ideal for all the gels. When my hubby used to run marathons he would hold them in his hands. Yeah, no. That wouldn't work for me!
ReplyDeleteI notice you're a skirt wearer, RaceReady also makes skirts...that's my weapon of choice during long runs!
ReplyDeleteNancy - I ordered a RaceReady skirt yesterday!
ReplyDeleteIt's your third marathon, right? So, what did you do in the past races?
ReplyDeleteR - I've run three 1/2 marathons and didn't use gel or any sort of nutrition at all during the race. I'll need to consume calories for a full marathon.
