Size Matters

…or, actually, it doesn’t. Especially when you’re thrifting. I bought this sweater and skirt on the same day at the same store, but they’re from different eras. The sweater (vintage) is an 8 and the skirt (modern) is a 0. Totally ridiculous.

Sweater, R and K Knits (vintage and thrifted). Skirt, The Limited (thrifted). Boots, Vince Camuto. Furry collar, gift. Jacket, H&M (thrifted). Socks, Sock Dreams. Necklace, Urban Outfitters.

I appreciate it when thrift stores organize clothing by size, but I try to be mindful of the vagaries of sizing. I usually browse the sections outside of my size range and I don’t allow a number to scare me off from at least trying on a possible garment.

  1. This was one of the first thrifting tips I put into practice. This is why trying on is a MUST.

LOVE the lacey detail on that fabulous skirt by the way! And I have ongoing boot envy over those beauties. Love 'em!

  2. Thrifting is the number one reason my closet ranges in size from 6-16!

  3. The only reason I ever check tags in thrift stores is to look at brand and check jean sizing (I don't typically buy vintage pants, so these are usually accurate within 2 sizes).

I love your sweater. It's adorable.

  5. I completely agree about sizing - I look through all racks in most stores. I've bought ranges from 2 to 12, and XS to XL. I only rely on actually trying on clothes for sizes.

I really love this look - the touches of toughness with the lacy trim on the skirt looks fabulous.

Thats exactly what I do---pick over everything anywhere near my range. I've found some awesome stuff located in strange sizes.

I don't even look at the number. I just eyeball it to see if it looks like it will fit me, and try it on.

That skirt is SO cute with the lace detail.

  10. I usually wear a 10-12 but just today I thrifted a size 6 blazer! Formerly I found the sizes being all jumbled together annoying, but now I understand that it actually offers possibilities~

  12. Kasmira,

Do you have any "shopping for a white sweater tips"? This is my biggest obstacle. I'm 5'7", fit but not slim, and large-busted. I LOVE white sweaters, but it seems that every one I end bringing home makes me look and feel like a total moose, and so I give up and give them away. I would love to have one or two to throw into rotation, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  13. Jodi, I'm afraid I'm pretty clueless on dressing a large bust. Light colored clothing tends to accentuate the part of the body on which it's worn. I would suggest asking a blogger with a similar body type. You might also ask a friend to shop with you. Sometimes an objective eye is helpful. Maybe you look more "va-va-voom" than mooselike.

  14. That's one of the first things I tell people who are new to thrifting: don't rely on the size tags! That skirt is great, the lace detail around the hem is so pretty.

  15. Hey, thank you for responding...that could possibly be the case. It's pretty easy to be self-conscious about them, no matter what you're packin'. Have a super weekend!!!
