Linen
I also dyed this little, linen jacket. I received it from an online swap. It was originally a light khaki that I intended to dye from the moment I saw it in Wardrobe Swap Shop. The tag says it’s 100% linen, so I thought it would take the dye well. I used an entire bottle of “wine” dye but only got a dark pink color.

ReplyDeleteLinen's actually pretty infamous for not taking dyes at all well. You can bleach the ever-loving heck out of it, but it's generally really, really hard to get to hold vivid, saturated colors.
ReplyDeleteI really like the jacket's current color, though. It's got a nice antiqued quality and looks awesome with your hair.
I like this color but I think darker would be even better.

I really want to dye a khaki jacket that I have, very thin and saltine-colored. I assume you take the buttons off (duh). But how do you preserve the colorof the stitching? There looks to be such a nice contrast...

ReplyDeleteI leave the buttons on. I've never seen them discolored by the dye.
The stitching is usually a cotton/poly blend or 100% synthetic so it won't take the dye anyway.
I've always thought that was part of the fun of overdyeing stuff - you're never 100% sure what color it will turn out. And then it's like bonus clothing b/c you get to wear it a few times with the resulting color before you dye it again to create yet another new fun piece. Imagine how much it would cost if you had bought khaki, rose, and wine colored jackets, but instead you'll get three for the price of one. I love it!
