Sewn Shut

Once upon a time, this cardigan frustrated me. I didn’t look right unbuttoned (completely or partially). If I did button it, it had a nice shape, but gaped between the buttons. I almost gave it away, but thought to try sewing it shut first.

Coat, Bebe. Sweater, Forever 21. Dress, Allison Taylor (thrifted). Boots, Miz Mooz. Earrings, Claire’s. Studded choker (worn as a bracelet), thrifted. Bracelet, Serket Jewelry. Bag, Vieta. Sunnies, Girl Props.

Now it fits perfectly, with no gaping. Since I don’t like the way it looks unbuttoned, I don’t mind a permanent solution.

  1. What a clever idea, so much better than giving it away. It's a pretty sweater and looks like it's very versatile. I really like how you chose to wear it today.
Did you sew it by hand or machine? The closure looks quite perfect.

  6. I sewed it by hand, turned inside out and stitched it so the thread didn't show on the outside.

  7. Love the contrast between the feminine nature of the skirt and sweater and the bracelets. Fantastic.

  8. great idea to make the piece work for you instead of against. I really love how those MM boots have weathered. They look so cool.

  12. Thank you for sharing this tip! As a well endowed gal I have such problems with gaping in button-up shirts and cardis. I love the idea of just stitching it up completely to get a nice, smooth look.

What a brilliant idea. I have a penchant for such cardigan styles myself but often they gape at the bust on me no matter how I try to get it to sit. I usually decide to not buy. But you have opened up my cardigan world simply by stitching it down! You are a clever clogs.

  14. I have that sweater in blue and it frustrates me all the time even though I adore the print! I've tried it with some dresses, and do find that's the easiest option.

    Cheers!

Oh awesome! I have that exact cardigan and every time I try to combine it with an outfit I end up getting frustrated with it. I think my very limited sewing skills might extend to fixing it the way you did yours. Thanks!
