Empire Waisted

Pale yellow cardigan, Mossimo. Geometric print dress, Max Studio. Leafy branch necklace, Urban Outfitters. Black pumps, Bandolino.

Some people really hate empire waists and baby-doll silhouettes, but they work for me. I always feel taller with a visually raised waist. I especially like empire waists like this one – where the below-bosom cinching extends down the ribcage a few inches.

I’m totally out of ideas on how to style this dress. I’ve worn it the following ways:

What do you suggest I pair it with next?

By the way, I really appreciated the suggestions on what to wear with my brown and white floral skirt. I’m pairing it with my sheer, aqua, tie-neck shirt next week!

  1. That dress needs some yellow pumps & a yellow headband.

The split sleeve detail on this dress is so pretty. I think you should wear it ::gasp:: on its own more.

I was definately thinking your yellow pumps as well. With a cincher or obi that has some yellow in it and the look would totally be changed.

Gorgeous! I love every way you've worn that dress, and I can't imagine how else you can do it! Look forward to seeing, though!

  5. I love the belt with it! It's a great dress, I think it looks good all the ways you have shown that you've worn it and I think it would look great just by itself. But I think the belt looks great. Sort of a classy kind of Audrey Hepburn look. But perhaps a splash of color too. I dunno. See I don't give fashion advice, this is why I read fashion blogs, so that you people can tell me how to dress.

I loved it with the wide cinched belt. I think this dress would looks really classy with red, too! Like how about red shoes and headband or belt? Also I think you have a cheer bluw short sleeved blouse, right? It might look cool to layer the other short sleeved blouse under it so the sleeves are layered.

    Hi,
I wanted to tell you once again how inspiring your blog is. I've been following it for a week or so. I haven't purchased anything new, but I have come up with so many different ways to style my old clothes. I dug up a red, thick, leather belt which I now use to update all my looks. I even paired my relatively summery clothes with tights and turtlenecks to create new outfits.
    Thank you!

  8. Wear it with your turquoise pumps (that I covet every time you wear them) and chunky turquoise jewelry.

I love this dress with the yellow sweater, as well as on its own and with the black belt. Maybe try the black belt look with red shoes? I also thought that brown/tan might go, though I'm not sure how exactly that would work.

  11. How about wearing a lace, sheer or button up shirt under the dress instead of wearing something over it? I'd try your white lace shirt and red pumps!

  12. I was thinking a bright layer underneath as well... we're heading into winter on the other side of the world so I was thinking long sleeves. You may find something more summery that works though.

A little off note, but Id LOVE to see you in an outfit that pairs colors together you don't normally see people wearing. Like a gorgeous plum and yellow :0)

This look is my favorite, though I always tend to be partial to some of your more feminine looks. --K
