Oven Man

Sweater, The Limited. Blouse, Bebe (altered). Jeans, Express. Wedge loafers, AE for Payless. Earrings, girlshop.com.

I stayed home today to wait for the oven man*. I had intended to wear the top of this ensemble with my gray bubble skirt and mustard pumps, but changed my plans when I needed to spend the day working from home. Jeans and loafers were more practical for a day in my 62** degree house and bicycling to and from the coffee shop. You think 62 is cold? It’s 35 outside!

*Our oven has been broken since December 2007. I decided to fix it now so I can make a turkey for Thanksgiving.

**On special occasions, we turn the thermostat up to 64! Today, I had to put a heater under the kitchen table (where I was working on my laptop) to keep my toes from turning to popsicles.

  3. katie - I don't sit still much. As long as I keep moving, I stay warm enough. And I have lots of good covers on my bed.

  4. If it makes you feel any better, it was 35 in Florida this morning too. You can't escape it.

  5. I love the sweater as well. You look so comfy and relaxed yet chic, it makes me happy. I couldn't live in a 62 degree house, I get cold really easily and i have bad circulation in my hands so they're always freezing cold.

  6. I take it you don't cook much?

  7. My husband would be so happy to live in your house. I'm being brave this year by setting it at 65 since I didn't enjoy the $200 electric bills last winter. Too bad we're already getting down in the 20's at night, which doesn't usually happen until January.
The only thing I can't picture doing in 62 degrees is getting out of the shower.

  9. So, did the oven man make it to your place? Looking like that, I think you would have made his day!

  10. To battle chilly indoors, I use my hot water bottle and fleece non-skid socks. The socks haven't pilled or shrunk at all and are machine washable as is my hot water bottle cover (not crazy about the warm rubber smell). There was an icky rainy day two weeks ago when I couldn't bear to take the socks off so I pulled my rain boots on over top and ran out to the store. I felt a bit like Ramona Quimby. Between the socks on my feet and water bottle at my back, I stay cozy (but not toasty) when our thermostat is low. Here's a link to the sock info:

  11. the olive creative - I discovered that I could make almost anything I wanted with the stovetop, a crockpot, the GFG, or the broiler. However, you CANNOT make chocolate chip cookies with any of those.

psuedokim - I run a portable heater in the bathroom during my shower. Much more efficient than heating the entire house. :)

stephanie n. - I don't think the oven man gave me a second glance. And the oven isn't fixed, I have to schedule a second appointment so that they can install a new element. Argh.

  12. Too funny...those are the exact "every day" and "special occasion" thermostat settings we use (sometimes 65 if we have weekend house guests). People think we're crazy. We figure, that's what sweaters are for.

Since we generally leave the thermostat at 60 when no one's home, I continue that practice on the days I work from home, but stay toasty with a space heater in my office/spare bedroom.

So I must say, I'm a trifle disappointed... I was intrigued to see how your shirt alteration turned out from your Nov. 15 post - it looked great on the hanger, but now that you're actually wearing it, you've hidden your beautiful creation under a sweater!

I'm curious, because I've never made that kind of alteration before, so I want to see what it looks like. One of my goals this year is to buy more clothes at thrift stores and make funky alterations to them. I like to sew, but starting from scratch takes so much time and motivation. So I want to try using thrift store clothes as a jumping-off point for altering/sewing unique clothes.

  14. Lisa - sorry to disappoint! The blouse is too sheer for me to ever wear without something layered over it. Even with a cami beneath, it looks too risque (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2109/2036734000_98198ede00_m.jpg). I do plan to layer it under other pieces that will cover less of the blouse. I hope you'll keep visiting.
