June Purchases

“Could be worse!” is one of my life mottos. When things look glum, I try to imagine how much worse it could be. So, when it comes to my adherence to the budget for June (and the year so far), I can only say “could be worse!” (And imagine the dozen or so things I didn’t buy!)

Boheme

1. Talbot’s leopard silk dress, $12.*

I went through the racks at Boheme by touch. When my fingers ran across this silk dress, I pulled it off the rack and hoped it would fit! It does (but just barely).

DSW

2. Carlos Santana shoes, $48.96

I don’t have a great close-up of the shoes, but the fabric is woven with an ethnic pattern in turquoise and orange on the hot pink background.

My Sister’s Closet

3. Express plaid shirt, $4.50
4. Jack E Ohs NYC earrings, $10
5. Vintage floral dress, $14

I can’t stay away from this shop. Every time I’m in Woodland, I have to stop and scout the deals.

Marshall’s

Below are the products of my emergency trip to Marshall’s to replace the silk pants I ripped while in Vacaville. I couldn’t decide between the crops and the skirt, so I got them both.

6. Kenar cropped pants, $19.99
7. Max Studio striped skirt, $19.99

Heart Boutique (via Byuti Salon)

8. Neon pink rhinestone necklace, $29.99*

I continue my obsession with neon.

Cuffs (via Deeda Salon)

9. Audrey teal crochet shorts, $42

These are possibly the most useless wardrobe item I’ve every purchased. Too fancy for doggie adventures. Too scandalous for work (even though I DID wear them to work on a Saturday). But I love the color, texture, and shape. I’ll have to persuade Beefy to take me on a date so I have an occasion on which to wear them.

June total: $210.43

Total spending for the year: $1020.74

Remaining 2013 budget: $418.26.

*I couldn’t find all my receipts, so I’m doing my best to remember some prices.

Plummy

I changed up my hair color by going darker and cooler. I’m still adjusting to the change and I’m not sure yet if I like it.

Dress, Bar III. Scarf, TJ Maxx. Shoes, Nine West. Earrings, Target. Bracelets, Charming Charlie and Tala’s Distant Treasures. Bag, Walgreen’s.

Rooftop

Despite being a rooftop, this is not a private location. Office buildings, condos, and hotels tower nearby. If anyone was watching, though, I was thankfully ignorant. The windows are too reflective to see inside and don’t open to allow catcalls.

Blouse, Romeo + Juliet Couture. Skirt, Max Studio. Pumps, Lela Rose for Payless. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings, Epcot Mexico. Bag, Vieta. Bracelets, Ed Hardy and thrifted.

Quick Change Artist

I impressed myself with a quick change from work to casual clothes. Even more impressive, I made this blouse “work” for business and then dinner out with Beefy.

Shirt, Forever 21. Skirt, American Eagle (overdyed). Shoes, Tom’s. Sunglasses, Girl Props. Belt, swap. Bag, Walgreen’s.

Trying

I gave these cropped pants another try today. They got a few compliments, but I’m not totally happy with them. Like most legged bottoms, they grow over the course of the day, leaving me with a baggy bottom and saggy knees.

Shirt, Forever 21. Pants, Kenar. Shoes, Oh Deer! Earrings, Claire’s. Sunglasses, Target. Bracelets, thrifted, gift, and Tala’s Distant Treasures. Belt, gift. Bag, Vieta.

Remoto

Five years and almost five months ago, I took my first self-portrait with a remote control. Many batteries and one device later (I lost that first one just a few months ago!), I’m still loving the freedom the remote (and tripod) give me to photograph my daily outfits.

Jacket, thrifted. Dress, Merona. Shoes, Oh Deer! Earrings, Claire’s. Necklace, Target. Bag, Caprice (thrifted and vintage).

Self-photography via remote takes a little practice and constant trial and error. Framing, posing, and exposure must all be corrected after taking a photo or two for reference. And sometimes, the remote itself is visible in the image:

Still, I love that little device!

My first remote control picture, in February 2008.

June Gloom

We got a bit of the June Gloom in Northern California this week. It was suddenly a bit too cool to wear this light, silk dress to an evening event in San Francisco. Happily, it took only a pair of tights and a rain jacket to keep me comfortable.

Dress, Parker. Belt, Deena and Ozzy. Tights, We Love Colors. Shoes, Steven. Sunglasses, Target. Necklace, Stella & Dot. Bag, Apt 9. Jacket, REI.

Saturday Shortsday

If you must work on a Saturday, you might as well wear shorts.

Blouse, INC (thrifted). Shorts, Audrey. Shoes, Gianni Bini. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings, Jack E Ohs NYC. Bag, Charming Charlie.

And you might as well hop around in an empty parking lot when you’re done.

Instant Casual Cool

I’ve been wearing this denim vest pretty regularly on Fridays. It instantly makes my business look less “business.”

Shirt, Sans Souci. Vest, AC-3998 (cut from a thrifted jacket). Skirt, Travis Ayers (thrifted). Shoes, Carlos Santana. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings, Cuffs. Brooch, Avon (gift). Bag, Go Jane.

Under Over Inside Out

Last time I paired this dress and blouse, I wore the blouse under the dress. Today I got crazy and wore the blouse over the dress. Earth-shattering, huh?

Shirt, FY2 (thrifted). Dress, Jones New York. Shoes, Franco Sarto. Earrings, Jack E Ohs NYC. Cuff, vintage gift. Bag, Go Jane.

So, is it better under or over?

The shirt is better...
