Puppies!

We drove to Fresno to see a woman about a dog. Seven tiny dogs. Border Collie puppies! Jasper accompanied us so that we could start to identify the right match.

Shirt, Eddie Bauer (thrifted). Skirt, Billabong. Boots, Ariat. Sunglasses and backpack, Target. Earrings, vintage.

We won’t know which puppy is ours for a few weeks. Others have picks before us and one puppy is destined to become a service dog. Little Yolo, with one blue eye, shows up in many of the pictures below because he was so outgoing and cuddly. I tried not to get too attached!

I have been following you for years and always thought highly of you, but I have to admit that I am a bit disappointed in the fact that it appears that you are puppy shopping. There are tons of great dog rescues that have puppies for adoption. Hopefully I am wrong about this and you are actually using a rescue group to get your new puppy.

Hi Beth! We've been working with two local adoption groups since the beginning of the year and have been unsuccessful finding a dog. There is more demand than border collies in this area. Happily, no one is going homeless!

Getting a second pup was the best thing for us. The older one showed her the ropes - it was much easier than starting fresh with the first puppy. Hope it all goes well for you!

I LOVE the boots! What model are they?

I'll look and let you know! The details will definitely be in my budget recap at the end of the month.

Beth- I rarely say anything on Kasmira's blog, because she (more than anyone I know) can fend for herself against people on the internet.

That being said... You should know that we as a couple decided to go to a breeder for our 2nd dog for a number of reasons, and not without an awareness that we would be judged by First-Name-Only people on the internet.

As Kasmira alluded to in her response to you, we've been applying for dogs with the two Northern California border collie rescue organizations since April of this year.

We requested to be considered as the "forever home" for over a dozen dogs during this time, and of those, we received 1 acceptance (the dog fought with Jasper aggressively, so we passed), 2 acknowledgements that we were good candidates, but that we were too late, 1 rejection (the foster family didn't think the dog would do well with another dog), and largely ignored by the rest.

As Kasmira mentioned... these groups have far more applicants than dogs, and they act like it.

"Why not a different breed" you ask...

Well, honestly, we like Border Collies. We know they're okay around cats (of which we have 5), their desired activity level fits our lifestyle, and many other breeds fit one of our needs, but not all of our needs.

So yeah... We went to a breeder. Your eyes do not deceive you.

I'm disappointed that our choice of how we came to have our dog is a disappointment to you.

ok, WOW! I actually didn't ask "why not a different breed?" because it is pretty obvious that you guys like a certain breed. I am sorry that working with the rescue groups didn't work out. It sounds like it was a very frustrating experience and that is a shame. My comment to Kasmira was honest and in no way nasty. I appreciated her response and thought that it was nice to hear that you guys did try to go the rescue route initially. Your response, however, speaks volumes. Once again, I am sorry that working with the rescue groups didn't work out. Enjoy your pets.

Beth- My apologies if my tone wasn't cool. That wasn't my intention. The rescue process was really frustrating, and I felt the need (for whatever reason) to defend our process. My issue, not yours. Peace - Beefy (Dan)

which puppy did Jasper pick? (BTW, I have had a rescue dog and 2 "bred" dogs... sometimes when you are looking at rescues, they are too big, too weird and some have behavioral problems. Responsible breeders are not devils.) When I had two dogs, the second dog's whole personality was reactive to the first dog- she wanted to steal his toys(not play with them herself, just steal them from him). They had a lot of amusing interactions. However, when the first dog was not around, the second dog was like a critic without a play.

Jasper wasn't much interested in the puppies. I think they were still too little. He mostly just explored the grounds while we snuggled pups.
