WCC: Recap

Thank you to Jane for organizing and prompting our Wardrobe Capsule Challenge week. I think we all learned a thing or two about “working that wardrobe!” I had fun coming up with five different looks for the week. Which was your favorite?

WCC: Day 5

Blouse, Forever 21. Skirt, Moda International. Scarf, stolen (but it originally came from Cappel’s). Lace-up pumps, Isaac Mizrahia. Brooch, swap. Handbag, thrifted and vintage. Tote, Tommy Hilfiger.

Look, look! It’s the black handbag!

Actually, it’s a two-bag kind of day. I have my book (Duma Key) and ballet togs in the tote and will take just the handbag with me to meet Londyn for coffee.

Last day of the Wardrobe Capsule Challenge. To answer the questions I received this week regarding the challenge…

Nope. No one at work noticed. I guess my sparkling personality outshines my clothing choices. Or no one really cares what I’m wearing. (Yeah, probably the latter!)

Nope. Tights did not count as a capsule item. And I guess leggings didn’t either!

Nope. Didn’t do any laundry all week. Call me gross, but I don’t normally launder after each wearing anyway. I only wash/dry clean my clothing if stinky or spilled upon. I did don fresh tights and underwear every day. Aren’t you glad?

Nope. Didn’t get tired of the “mini-wardrobe.” I actually don’t get excited about wearing my outfits. For me, the fun is picking them out. In this case, I found the planning process to be extra challenging and entertaining. I did miss the freedom to add accessories, particularly in my hair, at the last minute.

I’ll post a recap and a poll tomorrow.

WCC: Day 4

Turtleneck, Charlotte Russe. Dress, Lipstick. Scarf, stolen from a play. Boots, White Mountain. Tights and leggings, Target. Earrings, Claire’s. Tote (not pictured), Tommy Hilfiger

See, I DO have earrings under this mass of hair

I feel kind of like a pirate in my slouchy boots and sash belt.

I think I cheated a little today. I pulled on gray leggings over my gray tights. Tights (i.e. hosiery) are free, but I don’t think leggings are. In my defense, they are very thin leggings, so they are almost like footless tights. What do you think? Must I walk the plank or perhaps suffer a flogging?

The black handbag will come out to play tomorrow – I promise!

WCC: Day 3

Cardigan, Wet Seal. Dress (worn as a blouse), Lipstick. Skirt, Moda International. Scarf, stolen from a theater production. Tights, Danskin. Lace-up pumps, Isaac Mizrahi. Earrings, Claire’s. Tote (not pictured), Tommy Hilfiger.

I’m not sure if I’m a fan of the way the dress under the skirt looks without obscuring layers.

Today, the serious repetition begins. Monday’s dress is almost unrecognizable as a blouse (and very little of it shows under the cardigan and scarf). The silhouette of the cardigan is pretty different from Monday’s, but anyone paying attention would realize it is the same garment. And there is just no disguising the fact that I wore this skirt yesterday.

I haven’t told a soul at work about the Wardrobe Capsule Challenge and I wonder if anyone will approach me to ask if I’m okay. Without the background, they might think my washing machine had broken or that Mike kicked me out of the house with only a single bag of clothing.

Still haven’t pulled out the black handbag. Maybe that was a waste of capsule space!

WCC: Day 2

Sweater, Charlotte Russe. Skirt, Moda International. Tights, Hue (they are navy). Lace-up pumps, Isaac Mizrahi for Target. Brooch, swap. Tote, Tommy Hilfiger (not pictured).

Lazy girl’s updo today, created with bobby pins instead of a hair stick.

I didn’t realize I was wearing navy tights until I got to work. I have a very hard time differentiating them from my black tights without natural or fluorescent lighting. Thankfully, they “go” with my outfit this time.

Today’s pieces:

No repeats from yesterday, except for the brooch. I have yet to use the scarf or black handbag.

December is starting off chilly! I’m glad that my capsule plans include tons of layering.

Wardrobe Capsule Challenge

On Monday, I will begin participation in Work That Wardrobe’s Wardrobe Capsule Challenge. I initially misunderstood the challenge to be 5 days wearing 10 wardrobe items, to include major clothing items, shoes, and accessories. I had already planned my week when I learned that the 10 items includes major clothing and shoes only. In addition, we are allowed 5 accessories and one “free” coat. (I was planning on wearing a coat anyway and not counting it.) After learning of the extra room, I added two bags to my capsule.

Major wardrobe items (7):

Turtleneck sweater, Charlotte Russe. Skirt, Moda International. Blouse, Forever 21. Dress, Lipstick. Cardigan, Wet Seal. Boots, White Mountain. Lace-up pumps, Isaac Mizrahi for Target.

Accessories (5):

Feather earrings, Claire's. Scarf, stolen from a play. Brooch, swap. Purse, thrifted and vintage. Tote, Tommy Hilfiger.

I chose a color palette of gray, navy, and black so that all the pieces would mix and match. I wanted to be able to wear each piece at least twice. I also thought it would be novel to layer a dress under a skirt, so I chose those two items with that use in mind. Finally, I wanted the experiment to be inexpensive (the priciest item is the skirt, which is half of a suit set I bought for around $70) and I wanted to utilize things I’ve gotten from swaps or the thrift store.

The challenge truly is one for me. I have a lot of clothes, and I love to rotate through my closet. It was a little painful to not line up something different to wear each day. However, I think it is a good exercise in thrift and in packing light. Stay tuned for a week of doing more with less!
