Dan's Auto Electric

I’m about to break Beefy’s anonymity*; his real name is Dan. Now you know exactly who he is, right?

Not having a common name myself, I delight in spying businesses like “Daniel’s This and That” or “Dan’s Food Stop” and accusing him of a double life as an industrialist. I busted him again in Eureka when we drove by Dan’s Auto Electric, Inc., complete with a mural. Gotcha, Dan!

*I haven’t really spoiled Beefy’s secret identity. Anyone with a desire to know and a bit of internet savvy probably could have figured it out.

Festival Shorts

I don’t know that I’d ever want to wear these festival shorts to an actual festival. The events seem so overhyped and mainstream at this point. I have no interested in Coachella or Bonnaroo or SXSW. I’ve been to Lollapalooza (and was so disappointed to hear Violent Femmes live). I never attended Lillith Fair, but I have a few of the albums. The only festival that truly piques my interest is Strawberry Music Festival. Maybe these shorts will make it to an actual festival someday. (If Strawberry doesn’t go bankrupt, first.)

For now, though, I’m wearing them at a rented beach cabin near Eureka, CA. And I’m doing all the performing (for Beefy and Jasper, much to their delight!)

Springspiration

The transitional seasons of spring and fall are sartorially inspiring. Also inspiring: this is my last day of work before a vacation!

Dress, Diane von Furstenburg (consignment). Shirt, Forever 21. Shoes, Nine West. Sunglasses, Girlprops. Earrings, vintage. Purse, Simply Vera. Bangles, Target and Tala’s Distant Treasures.

This outfit is a little bit of spring and a little bit of zany. I’m ready to take some time off to enjoy the transition from winter to summer.

Blame Budget Babe

I only walk into Kohl’s once or twice a year. Usually, its because I’m bored and Kohl’s happens to be close. This time, I made a deliberate trip under the pretext of buying baby socks (to protect Jasper’s injured pad), but it was really because the Budget Babe posted pictures of this Peter Som for Kohl’s shirtdress.

Fit

Other than items made of spandex or tailored for me, I’d say very few things in my wardrobe fit me just right. I do the best I can with off the rack items, making adjustments with fashion tape or safety pins. Hiding loose waists with a fitted topper. Disguising too low necklines by layering another shirt underneath.

Today I’ve used double-sided tape between my shirt buttons and accomodated for the skirt’s scanty overlap with pettipants. (This skirt is too loose in the waist and a smidge too tight in the hips. I just pull it low and pretend the ruching hides these flaws.)

It's a Bird!

This outfit had people doing a double take. Is it a plane? Is it a crazy dress? Or is it a crazy shirt under a crazy dress? (Hint: the answer is “c.”)

Sporty Sunday: Hiking Lake Clementine Trail

I gave the Auburn State Recreation Area another try, but was disappointed, again. We did not get lost or run afoul of horses (like last time). Instead, I was unhappy with the heavy use, restrictions on canines, and dull trail.

The morning started auspiciously enough. We were the first to park in the lot at the Lake Clementine trail head. The beginning of the walk took us under the impressive Foresthill Bridge, made even more impressive by low-hanging clouds. The hillsides along the first mile are covered in poppy and lupine. Clark’s Pool, a swimming spot created by an underwater mining dam, is inviting and also reached within the first mile. After that, though, it’s all downhill (or rather, uphill).

Other than the moderate grade to keep things interesting, the rest of the hike is pretty boring along the wide track. The river is far below. The scenery is uninspiring. Peeks of the Lake Clementine dam excited me, but the trail’s end is 0.4 miles before the dam (and the structure is not visible from that point). From the end, one must walk along a paved road to visit the overlook. Dogs, unfortunately, are not allowed along the road. We turned around and headed back to dally at Clark’s Pool. I wish we hadn’t gone beyond the pool in the first place. (All the pictures are from that first mile.)

From the number of cyclists we saw on the way back, I surmised that this trail is popular with moutain bikers. Jasper is inclined to chase and bark at bicycles, so the encounters were a bit unpleasant. (I take full responsibility for his bicycle issues. We need to do some training.)

I might do this trail again with a novice hiker. It’s easy and easily reached. For wilderness wanderers, though, it’s a let-down.

Source: Salcedo-Chourre, Tracy. "Lake Clementine Trail." Best Hikes Near Sacramento. Morris Book Publishing, 2012. Print.

Length: 4.6 miles if hiked as described in the book. We hiked 3.6 miles due to the dog restrictions.

Water: The American River was flowing well, as were seasonal creeks that cross (under) the trail.

Use: Moderate to heavy. We were off the trail by 9:30 a.m. and it was already experiencing moderate traffic. I imagine use is heavy by noon.

Differences from published description: None.

Jasper’s rating: 2 paws out of 5.

Sporty Sunday is a recurring feature in which I share my fitness routine and offer and solicit advice. While this content might seem a little out of place in an outfit diary, a healthy, strong body is the foundation of my wardrobe. I hope to inspire my readers to be fit as well as stylish!

Cole Porter Night

For a Sunday, I was a bit dressed up. Normally, after my hike and swim lesson, I lounge around in pyjamas. On this Sunday, though, Beefy and I joined a meet-up group to sing Cole Porter tunes with live musicians. It was sort of like classy karaoke; no one was drunk, the singers were great, and the music wasn’t canned.

Shirt, INC (thrifted). Skirt, Chaus Sport (thrifted). Shoes, J Crew. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings and scarf, Claire’s. Bag, Liz Claiborne (thrifed and gifted). Bangles, thrifted.

I may have dressed the part of casual jazz singer, but I didn’t have the nerve to sing with the group, this time. (If only it were a bunch of off-key boozers out of sync with the recorded track . . . then, I might have dared to sing!) Beefy killed it, though, and I committed to sing at the next meet-up: Gershwin night!

Does anyone wear real pearls anymore? I prefer the costume version. I can pile them without breaking the bank.

Fair Shake

I hate it when I debut a new wardrobe item in what turns out to be a rather lackluster outfit. For example, I wore this new-to-me pastel plaid shirt last month as a part of an ensemble I didn’t much like. Today’s outfit was more of a success, but still doesn’t show off the shirt’s western styling. I’ll have to wear it again (NOT under a dress) so you can fully appreciate my find. (Or find it thoroughly appalling. Tastes differ.)
