Meow Mix

So. It’s raining again. After spending the last two days (and this morning) in a hooded raincoat, I mixed it up with a wool cap and a pleather jacket today. I added an umbrella for the heaviest downpours.

Knotty

I noticed knotted shirts getting a lot of hate on a GOMI forum. Not as much hate as the “shame tuck,” but tied shirts seem to be generally disliked. I like the styling option, though. Especially to add shape to a shirt over a dress.

Shirt, Forever 21. Dress, Muse (gift from a reader). Tights, We Love Colors. Boots, Nine West. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings, Claire’s. Clutch, Maggi B.

Diane

I’ve been pretty lucky finding second-hand Diane von Furstenburg pieces. There’s the jacket I wore Monday and this dress I wore today. AND, I just found another dress, half-off, at Renaissance (consignment) this morning.

Jacket, thrifted. Dress, Diane von Furstenburg (consignment). Boots, Miz Mooz. Earrings, vintage. Scarf, Frangi. Bag, thrifted.

It isn’t the label I’m snobby about as much as the fabric choices and cut. The jacket is wool and both dresses are silk. The designer does a wonderful job creating garments that flatter the female shape. I know I’ll feel and look good in her pieces. Are you a Diane von Furstenburg fan?

Jade

It’s been a while since I did a blue and green mix. This blend of periwinkle, turquoise, teal, mint, lime, and jade has a cool, watery feel.

Shirt, American Eagle (thrifted). Skirt, J Crew (consignment). Shoes, Colin Stuart. Sunglasses, Girl Props. Necklace, Phai’s House of Jade. Bag, Imoshion. Jacket, INC (consignment).

Sporty Sunday: Hiking North Fork of the American River (Auburn State Recreation Area)

100 Classic Hikes in Northern California calls this hike “North Fork of the American River.” However, there are many hikes along the American River’s North (and South) Fork, and most are probably better than this one. Nevertheless, this loop in the Auburn State Recreation Area was extremely popular on a sunny Sunday.

The trailhead is easily accessible from Hwy 49, but be sure to arrive by 10 am on a weekend to find parking on the wide shoulder. The hike described in the book starts near No Hands Bridge (one of the trail’s highlights!) and then heads up very steep Trainers Hill Trail. The climb tops out at another of the hike’s best features: the picturesque Pointed Rocks area, a blue oaks woodland dotted with large and small, lichen-covered rocks. Next, the book directs one to follow Western States Trail back to No Hands Bridge, but we never found this trail.

The Auburn State Recreation Area is a maze of trails. I don’t recommend venturing onto them without a map. The trail directions in the book were certainly not adequate. Jasper and I ended up far off-course, back at the highway, but miles from the car. We encountered some friendly runners (training for the 50K Way to Cool) who directed us up Shortcut Trail to the Wendell T. Robie trail and back to our starting point. Despite frustration with being “lost,” I appreciated that the detour took us past a couple mossy streams where Jasper and I both could cool off.

Yes, Jasper’s in every picture this week. He’s just so photogenic!

I doubt we’ll return to this area. It’s ideal for cross-country running and short outings with children. However, for a woman seeking solitude and a dog who loves to range free, it was a bust. We made up for the disappointment with a stick fetching session in the river and chalked this one up to experience.

Source: Soares, John R. and Soares, Marc J. "North Fork of the American River." 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California. 3rd ed. Seattle: The Mountaineers Books, 2008. Print.

Length: 5 miles if hiked as described in guidebook.

Water: American River and tributaries.

Use: Heavy. Be prepared to encounter other hikers, runners, children, horses, bicycles, and dogs.

Differences from published description: The trail directions in the book did not seem to translate well to reality.

Jasper’s rating: 2.5 paws out of 5.

Sporty Sunday is a recurring feature in which I share my fitness routine and offer and solicit advice. While this content might seem a little out of place in an outfit diary, a healthy, strong body is the foundation of my wardrobe. I hope to inspire my readers to be fit as well as stylish!

Sac Fashion Week 2014: Saturday

On the final night of 2014 Sacramento Fashion Week, I wore one of my favorite cocktail dresses. I found this sequined, 80’s number at a Cincinnati thrift store. I couldn’t have paid more than $10 for it. I love the sweetheart, off-the shoulder neckline. It’s so flattering on those narrow of shoulder, but wide of hip. (And, man, does it show off dorky tan lines.)

Dress, Lillie Rubin (thrifted and vintage). Shoes, BCBGeneration. Earrings, vintage. Sunglasses, Girlprops. Bag, thrifted vintage. Rings, thrifted, vintage, and/or heirloom.

Sac Fashion Week 2014: Friday

I had originally planned to wear a different outfit to Friday night’s show, but it exposed a slice of bare midriff and I chickened out at the last moment. Instead, I bared my arms and legs. (But I wore a jacket most of the evening because the venue was a little chilly for bare arms. Somehow, bare legs never bothers me as much.)

Dress, JMC (thrifted and vintage). Shoes, Prabal Gurung for Target. Sunglasses, Girlprops. Earrings, Cuffs. Jacket, INC (consignment). Bag, Carlos Santana.
