Stop. Doggie Time.

It’s probably no surprise that I know where to find a friendly dog in almost every part of my territory. I’ve got the hookup in east Sacramento, Davis, and Vacaville businesses. When I’m feeling blue, I schedule a stop with one of my “therapy dogs.” I just need to find a pooch in Elk Grove and Woodland. Of course, a furry snuggle is always waiting for me at home.

Toasting Downtown

This month, I’m visiting eight different Toastmasters clubs with lunchtime meetings in downtown Sacramento. Today, I attended the River City Toastmasters meeting in historic Sacramento City Hall. Seeing the inside of the various downtown buildings is almost as fun as meeting all the new people.

Jacket, BCBG Max Azria (consignment). Dress (worn as a blouse), Parker (consignment). Belt, Buckle. Skirt, Hauber Sporting Life (thrifted). Boots, Lauren Ralph Lauren. Sunglasses, Target. Earrings, flea market.

The Stars Are My Destination

Named after a Star Trek character, I was destined to become a sci-fi junkie. Somehow, the two-volume A Treasury of Great Science Fiction made its way onto my bookshelf when I was still in grade school. I read and reread those stories over the years, finding layers I hadn’t registered the first few times and finally making sense of the more esoteric tales. “The Chrysalids” by John Wyndham and Alfred Bester’s “The Stars Are My Destination” were favorites from the first read.

Sweater, Full Tilt (thrifted). Dress, Bebe. Shoes, Chelsea Crew. Sunglasses and bag, Target. Scarf, swap. Earrings, Francesca’s Closet.

Given my history, it’s no surprise that I’m obsessed with The 100 after discovering it on Netflix a few days ago. I suppose it’s a little more post-apoc than sci-fi, but I love both genres.

Washed Away

El Nino has been good to us. Our reservoir is at a record high for this time of year. The American River is running high and my usual picture spot under the Watt Avenue bridge is far under water. Bring on the rain!

Blazer, Bebe (consignment). Dress, Gap. Tights, Me Moi. Boots, Lauren Ralph Lauren. Sunglasses and bag, Target.

My favorite spot is way back there:

Our doggie friends watch us as we play at the school. Jasper and Jackson are learning horse manners. Jackson’s first trip to the beach!

Thriller

I was introduced to Dean Koontz in a paperback picked up at a yard sale while on family vacation in eastern Washington. I spent that evening binge-reading Watchers in our tent trailer, barely looking up to drag Fritos through a sour cream and salsa dip. The taste of greasy corn and spicy tomatoes will forever be the flavor of terror. And the scent of the arid desert in which we spent the night will always call to mind a murderous mutant monkey hiding in the shadows.

Shirt, One Star (thrifted). Skirt, Forever 21 (consignment). Tights, Target. Shoes, Chelsea Crew. Necklace, Taneesi. Belt and bag, thrifted.

I still have a penchant for the thrilling tale, whether it be imaginary or true. I have to ration my story podcasts or I’ll listen to them all at once.

When I’m not driving, I’m reading The Cheechakoes: the true story of a family homesteading in southeast Alaska in the mid-40’s. Thankfully, there are no scary monkeys. Just vicious bears.

Stay All Day

I stopped by Ulta today to buy some bronzer. (I’ve been out for months.) While I was there, I also picked up two more Stila All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner. My current pen is starting to fade and I always try to have a backup (or two) because it ruins my morning to have a pen run dry.

Vest, AC-3998 (cut from a thrifted jacket). Sweater, Joseph A (thrifted). Skirt, Victoria’s Secret. Boots, Lauren Ralph Lauren. Necklace, Zad. Bag, Target.

The liner really does stay all day. Well, I must admit it used to transfer above my crease until I started using a primer. But now it stays all day!

Mistakes

Note to self: these are sitting shoes. Do not wear them on customer calls. Your feet will feel tender and swollen after a couple of hours. No no no.

Jacket, London Jean. Dress, Banana Republic (consignment). Shoes, Prabal Gurung for Target. Sunglasses, Target.

Some people might say blue eyshadow is a “no no,” but I like it. I guess it’s the Barbie-loving, 80’s kid in me.

But I should say “no” to running my rabid panda border collie on a worn leash. He snapped it lunging into a busy street. Thankfully, the drivers all stopped and Jackson responded immediately to his recall.

Spring Air

I took today’s photos at Paradise Beach, along the American River. It was a gorgeous day and I had plenty of company. Everyone seemed to be out, taking in the spring air.

Shirt, Banana Republic. Dress, swap. Boots, American Eagle (consignment). Sunglasses, Giselle. Earrings, consignment.

A natural fiber shirt tied over this sheer dress is one of my tried-and-true warm weather outfits:

Zoro was out enjoying the spring air (and blossoms), too:
