In the Navy

Wrap dress, Merona. Sailor scarf, borrowed from Fashion Lady (Londyn). Slip and earrings, thrifted. Patent navy belt, The Limited. Headband, Claire’s. Beaded bracelet, Bitten. Gold watch, Raymond Weil. Red heels, X Appeal.

I fell in love with this naval themed scarf after seeing Londyn wear it on her blog. She was kind enough to let me borrow it. At first, I was going to tie it cowboy style, the way I’ve seen many girls wearing their scarves lately, but it just made me look as if I were about to commit highway robbery. Instead, I wore it sailor style in homage of the scarf’s print and Mike’s years spent in the Cracker Jack uniform. (How I wish I had a picture of that to show you!) I thought the knotted scarf looked especially precious with my red coat.

I recently received a comment asking if I wore slips with my jersey dresses since the material can be transparent or just plain clingy in the wrong places. Absolutely! I also find them essential for wrap dresses. Slips are considered rather old-fashioned so it’s hard to (a) find them and (b) find cute ones for a good price. It totally grosses Mike out, but I buy all my slips at the thrift store. I guess they come from dead old ladies. I wash them before wearing and don’t give their origin a second thought. Where else can you find such prettily detailed underpinnings for a few bucks?

Love the outfit, and I nearly spewed coffee on my monitor laughing about the dead old ladies slips.

I've got a few dead old lady slips myself! Good choice on the scarf tie -- cowboy style not so great.

I went to Walmart the other day looking for a slip. I had NO idea they would be so hard to find. (And apparently fat women don't wear them, b/c I had a hell of a time finding one that would go over my size 16 rear.) Never thought to look for Dead-Old-Lady Slips, though!

I adore your outfit today - everything about it! As for the slips, I tried to buy one last summer to wear under a somewhat sheer dress, but no luck. I will have to try thrift stores and hopefully that dress can come out of the closet this summer.

Anon - I actually just tied it the way you would a man's tie (don't know what the knot is called). Because of the way the scarf is folded, it came out looking rather sailor-ish.

I love slips! Can't explain why but I love them...I'm very tempted to go down to the thrift store after work today!
You're a bad influence :)

Haha, my fiance thinks the same thing about anything thrifted. He hates it with a passion.

good look with the scarf but overall you're a little heavy handed accesories-wise. to place more emphasis on the scarf, maybe lose the yellow headband or red shoes - there just too many competing primary colors or something. and then maybe just wear the watch but no bracelets. and if you do wear the headband, lose the earrings, and try some more neutral shoes. idk, you'd just have to play around.

like the scarf with the coat on, but there's not enough contrast with the dress. something is just "off" about it. maybe a solid scarf, or a more subtle print would make sense. love the dress and red shoes are always a hit. seems like they go with anything! i can't get enough pairs of them!

i guess i would echo the last couple comments...too busy, accessory-wise. like coco chanel said, before leaving the house, remove one piece of jewelry. i think it might help a little in the taste-level of some of your outfits. the dress is lovely tho!
