Post Holiday Bulge

I stayed active during the holidays but I didn’t keep up with my running. I think the booze and unrestrained eating caught up with me a little. I’m back to my routine now, to include separate runs for each dog each morning. Take that, holiday bulge!

Sweater, Grace. Skirt, Chaus Jeanswear (consignment). Boots, Steve Madden. Hat, Nine West. Earrings, Charming Charlie. Bag, thrifted.

In addition to the running, I went on a butt-kicking hike yesterday and walked the dogs around the neighborhood this evening.

Sporty Sunday: Hiking Blue Ridge Trail

This is the third time I’ve made the 2100 foot climb up Blue Ridge and it still makes my legs ache for days afterwards. Top Trails Sacramento gives this a difficulty rating of 5 (out of 5) and my friend Jerry calls it “the death march.” I was hoping for a little holiday penance and a tired puppy. I got both.

This is a popular off-season hike because it’s accessible all year long (except after strong rains). In the summer, I hear it really is a “death march” because of the exposure and steep climb. If you do visit in summer, I recommend a leisurely walk up Rayhouse Road, instead, and then a return to Cache Creek for a cooling dip.

The 2.69-mile climb to the top of Blue Ridge (and the junction with Fiske Peak Trail) takes you from dense forest at the bottom to sparse chaparrel (and plentiful boulders) at the top. Although the grade is challenging the views open up by the time you might consider giving up. Others I’ve talked to don’t consider this trail finished unless they’ve hiked the additional mile south, along Blue Ridge, to Fiske Peak. Personally, I think the views from the ridge itself are amazing.

This is a great trail for dogs, but use caution. The trail is narrow and there are many blind corners. It can be difficult to pass non-dog-loving hikers and easy to surprise both dogs and peoples at turns. (I’ve had two bad experiences here when a dog ran ahead and scared itself and the oncoming hiker at a blind corner.) There are steep drop-offs that are dangerous for both dopey mutts and unattended children. The trail is mostly dry and always steep so bring water for the humans and canines.

Length: 5 miles.

Water: Cache Creek (actually a river) flows year round. This excursion was the first time I’d seen Still Gulch flowing. Generally, the hike is dry after the first half mile and you should bring plenty of water for yourself and your animal companions.

Use: Moderate to heavy. The grade discourages some folks, but others come for the views and free access.

Differences from published description: None.

Jasper’s rating: 4 paws out of 5.

Sporty Sunday is a recurring feature in which I share my fitness routine and offer and solicit advice. While this content might seem a little out of place in an outfit diary, a healthy, strong body is the foundation of my wardrobe. I hope to inspire my readers to be fit as well as stylish!

World Traveler

One of my favorite categories to thrift is “other people’s souvenirs.” It’s like a little virtual travel for me. And I feel good knowing that a piece of someone’s beloved trip lives on in my possession. On my last thrifting excursion, I scored an embellished straw bag from St Maarten and this Peruvian sweater.

Coat, Dex (swap). Sweater, thrifted. Skirt, American Eagle (thrifted). Leggings, We Love Colors. Boots, Style & Co (thrifted). Bag, thrifted. Owl brooch, swap. Disney pins, Disneyland. Necklace, gift.

365 photos from the last three days:

Jasper turned 2. We went on a snow hike. Beefy and I won a free meal at Skip’s Kitchen.

40 B4 40: Two Month Progress

Two months gone on my year-long 40 before 40 project. This is my progress so far:

2. Skydive or hanglide - Beefy gave me a skydiving gift certificate for Christmas. I plan to go in May.

6. Snowshoe - I snowshoed and picnicked with my sister and REI. It was awesome! Details to follow.

10. Renew my passport - I continue to have trouble establishing my identity. I finally got my California Driver License, but the clerk entered the wrong birth date. I’m currently 3 days younger than I used to be! But now I have two different birthdays on record and no valid photo identification. I’m not sure how I’m going to manage to get on multiple flights this month.

14. Teach Jasper to walk nicely on a leash - we’ve started practicing this during the walk portions of our morning runs. At this point, the behavior is still very treat-dependent.

15. Do a 365 Photo project - I’ve probably taken way too many pictures of my dogs, but, hey, it’s a picture! Find my photos here.

17. Take a sewing class - I’ve signed up (and paid) for a class in February. (I mistakenly reported that the class was in January in the last 40B440 update.)

18. Meditate - the Meditation Oasis podcasts still work like a charm to put me to sleep, but is that really meditation?

21. Learn to 2-finger whistle - done! I use this to call the dogs. It’s very effective.

22. Do the splits - I finally found a splits routine that I like and it’s only 12 minutes long! I practice my flexibility after my morning runs.

24. Finish making all the burgers in Veggie Burgers Every Which Way - I made Butternut Squash, Black Bean, and Chestnut Burgers and Corn Burgers with Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Goat Cheese in December. Next up: Curried Eggplant and Tomato Burgers. After that, we have about 12 more burger recipes to go to finish the book. (We started over three years ago and I’m a little fuzzy on which burgers we’ve already made.)

25. Write one special content blog post per month - completed for November and December.

28. Participate in Toastmasters - I attended one regular meeting and the club’s holiday party. I officially join this month.

32. Practice ambidexterity - I asked Beefy for poetry books for Christmas so that I could copy the poems with my left hand. So far, I’ve just read the poems.

33. Learn a new piano song - I chose the song (Tori Amos’ Happy Phantom, much to Beefy’s dismay) and ran through it a couple of times. It needs a lot more practice!

35. See a drive-in movie - done!

39. Send out holiday cards - done!

I’ve got plans to get my photo with Mickey and appear on a podcast this month. And maybe I'll make some real progress on the passport.

Best and Worst Wardrobe Purchases of 2014

I keep track of what I spend on my wardrobe each year, but I lose track of the items themselves. What were the best deals? What did I pay most for? What were my best buys? What were the worst?

I hope to start an annual tradition of listing my top five cheapest, most expensive, best, and worst purchases of the year.

Cheap

These were all (surprise!) second-hand finds.

1. Tilt denim skirt $0.74 (thrifted)
2. Anne Klein red envelope purse, $1 (garage sale)
3. Floral blouse, $1.48 (thrifted and already returned to the thrift pool due to it’s fiber content)
4. Dana Pierce wool tweed shorts, $2.33 (thrifted and not listed under my “worst” buys although some may beg to differ!)
5. Turquoise open-weave sweater, $2.50

Expensive

The most expensive items are shoes and/or made from leather or silk.

1. Ariat Dahlia Dainty boots in Brown, $199.00.
2. Ella Moss Marigold Print Silk Dress, $158.90.
3. Joe’s “Abby” cutout leather bootie, $132.90
4. Brynn Marina shoe, $109.00
5. Zara leather biker jacket, $99.99.

Worst

Of everything I purchased in 2014, I most regret these:

1. Zara leather biker jacket, $99.99. Not only was this one of the most expensive items I bought, it’s also one of the crappiest. First of all, it’s too small. I’m not a big person and I can barely zip this size medium jacket. Second, the hems are finished with something that feels like wire, so the bottom edges and lapels and cuffs are stiff and emerge from my closet in odd contortions. I’ll give the jacket a few more tries, but I’m pretty disappointed in it.
2. Kelly and Katie leopard slippers, $59.95. The irony is that I went to DSW specifically to buy these shoes after I hurt my ankle. I’ve worn the other two pairs of “sensible” shoes I purchased on that DSW trip far more than this slipper style shoe. I may like them better in the spring, with bare legs and skirts. We shall see.
3. Zara Combined leather high heeled court shoe, $39.99. These are utterly useless. Despite inserts, they fall off my feet with every step. I gave up and sent these to the thrift store. Have I mentioned that nothing I have ever bought from Zara has worked out?
4. Willi Smith ikat trousers, $29.99. Like nearly every other pair of pants I own, these “grow” over the course of the day. They go from slightly slouchy in the morning to super saggy in the afternoon. I continue to hate pants.
5. Leggings Queen ankle zip faux leather leggings, $24.95. I am regret spending a $20 Amazon gift card on these leggings (bringing my cost down to $4.95). The zippered ankle makes them painful to wear with boots, so the only shoe they look right with is a pump. But I’m not a fan of leggings and pumps. These leggings could NEVER be worn as pants because the effect above my thighs is obscene. Trust me.

Best

Spoiler alert: classics in neutral colors are my best buys. I love statement pieces, but it’s the well-made basics that I wear to death.

1. Joe’s “Abby” cutout leather bootie, $132.90. These were one of my most expensive, but also best, purchases. I’d been searching for a black bootie with special details for months when these showed up on a Nordstrom sale. The double zipper and cut out makes them special. The chunky heel makes them practical. I debuted them in October and have already worn them 8 times. They have become a wardrobe staple.
2. Lauren Ralph Lauren Bethan Tall Dress Boot in black, $89.99. I only paid $39.99 for these, thanks to a $50 gift card, but I would have paid full price for these beautiful and versatile boots. I bought these in February and wore them 17 times in 2014.
3. Black and white Merona purse, $34.99. This isn’t real leather and it is a knock-off of some designer, but I carry it all the time. Over 32 times. (I carried it so often that I stopped including it in every outfit photo, so I don’t have an exact count of the number of days I used this bag.)
4. Audrey Brooke boots, $25.00. This isn’t a super fancy brand (I think it is a DSW house brand) and I bought them at a consignment shop. I would have paid much more than $25 for these buttery boots in rich cognac with warm gold-tone accents. I bought them in February and wore them 10 times. I have a pair of dark brown Nine West boots and thought a second pair of brown boots would be redundant. Instead, I discovered that the difference in sheen, tone, and heel and toe shape make these quite distinct from my other brown boots.
5. Under Skies Dress, $21.99. This was another consignment purchase. I think Under Skies is a crappy junior’s brand, but this dress is mostly cotton, so I forgive the juvenile label and lack of lining. I love the black and white pattern, fit and flare shape, pleather details, cut-outs, and suitability for layering. I’ve worn it nine times since I bought it in July. This post reminds me of all the ways I have yet to wear it!

Over to you: what were your best deals? What did you spend the most on? What did you regret buying? What has turned out to be a wardrobe staple?
